Insider Info

Additional Information

Genetic technologists generally have a bachelor's degree in a science or medical technology. They then receive an additional one to two years of training in a genetic technology program.

"Ours is a post-degree program," says Fred Bauder. He works with a technical institute. "We find that a bachelor's degree is necessary because students need to have a background in the area."

Most genetic technologists are required to become certified or register with a professional organization.

Extra Requirements

Some states require technologists and technicians to be licensed. Employers may prefer to hire candidates who have certification. A number of organizations offer certification, including the American Association of Bioanalysts, American Medical Technologists, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
