Additional Information

There is no direct education for this career, and you cannot become an arts manager overnight. Most agents have some prior experience in the industry as presenters, producers or artists. Many of them also have some training in business or marketing. Most universities offer courses in those fields.

Industry insiders recommend a combination of marketing training and arts experience. "Get a variety of experiences in the arts, in things like production, marketing and development," says Sue Ruben. She is a manager who represents chamber music ensembles.

It's also a good idea to start in a larger arts management company to get experience. "You might want to start out working for one of the big agencies," says arts manager Jeannette Gardner.

Finally, you can gain some insight by talking to an arts manager in your community. Start by contacting local arts associations or venues where events take place. Ask them to put you in touch with an agent so you can ask your own questions.
