Chantal Kealey says that students who hope to study audiology should have
a really good base in science, math and physics. Kealey is the manager of
audiology for the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and
Audiologists in Ottawa, Ontario.
"Hearing evaluations are based on measurements," says Chantal Kealey. "You're
measuring the degree and type of hearing loss, you're measuring hearing loss
across different frequencies, and the intensities across the different frequencies.
This is why a math and science base is important." she says.
"In the basic science that underlines the training in audiology, we have
classes in acoustics, in biology, in pharmacology," says Alison Grimes. Grimes
is the president of the American Academy of Audiology. "So basic mathematics,
basic science is definitely important," she says.
Grimes says that in the United States, students who hope to obtain a degree
in audiology need to first obtain a bachelor's degree. "The bachelor's degree
can be in a number of different fields," she says. "It could be in psychology,
it could be in biology, it could be in speech and hearing science."
Grimes says that students then need to complete a four-year doctoral degree
leading to the Au.D. degree, which is the Doctor of Audiology degree.
