Additional Information

To be an environmental accountant, you'll need training in two different areas: accounting and science. These days, that means a full accounting designation and an undergraduate degree in the sciences or environmental issues.

Anne Davis got into environmental accounting because she had a background in science.

A science background is appealing to employers, says Randy Billing. He works with an accounting firm in the environmental services department.

"Accountants with undergraduate degrees in sciences like chemistry and engineering play a specialized role in environmental auditing," he said in an interview with the industry magazine The Bottom Line.

Eventually, you may choose to become certified by the Board of Environmental Auditor Certifications. It was created by the Environmental Auditing Roundtable and the Institute of Internal Auditors to issue certifications relating to environmental auditing and other scientific fields.
