Insider Info

Diane H. Sonnenwald is a professor and an advisor for the student chapter of the American Society of Information Science at the University of North Carolina. She says the technology that's available now is not sufficient to take care of the massive amounts of information out there. A human touch will be needed for at least another decade.

"I don't think we'll see a decline because the Internet is being used more and more. More information is available via the Internet and the technology to help people find information is progressing, but not as rapidly as the number of resources and information. And demand for information from the Internet is expanding."

Starting salaries tend to be high. "Our graduates typically earn $40,000 to $55,000 at the master's level," she says.

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
