Additional Information

No formal education is required to become an exotic farmer or rancher. But you'll need to know about animals before you launch into this type of work.

Visit local exhibitions or try to join an animal club. Any experience you can get looking after animals, no matter what type, will be beneficial for work as an exotic animal farmer.

"When we first got into it, we just studied a few books that had some information in them and we went to farms to see their operation to get an idea of what we had to do," says farmer Mike Spanhanks. "And from there, we just kind of grew on our own."

Another way to learn about the trade is to take agricultural courses at college or university. Courses that offer business management may be helpful for farmers who are going to run their own operations.
