Additional Information

If you have an idea and see a small business in your future, start your research now. Find out how similar businesses are doing. Study good financial practices.

"Read everything you can get your hands on about marketing, advertising and small business principles," says small business owner Walter Daniels.

Get some experience by working in a small business. Watch how things are done and think about what you might do differently.

Find a business you like and respect and contact the owner. Ask some questions and see if they have any advice for you. A successful business is one of the best places to look for advice, according to small business owner Marlene Cox.

"Look for entrepreneurial and small business associations in your area," says Daniels.

Experts also suggest you look for business courses offered by local community colleges or chambers of commerce. These can provide you with valuable information.

"You could go to university and take business administration, but I think you're better off just getting out there and learning by doing," says Cox.
