Insider Info

Additional Information

In the U.S., training is generally a one-year program that includes a combination of classroom study and supervised clinical practice.

All states require LPNs to pass a licensing examination after completing a state-approved practical nursing program. A high school diploma is usually required for entry, but some programs accept people without a diploma.

Catherine M. Coakley is the coordinator of an LPN program. She says that LPN training colleges in the U.S. are not required to be accredited. However, students are not eligible for federal financial aid unless they are applying to an accredited school.

Coakley says LPN training is an excellent first step towards RN (registered nurse) training. Many colleges offer advanced standing to LPNs who graduate from an accredited program. These college programs are flexible and geared towards the LPN who continues to work while taking the more advanced training.

Extra Requirements

Optional certifications for LPNs are available through professional associations in areas such as gerontology, wound care, and intravenous (IV) therapy. Certifications show that an LPN or LVN has an advanced level of knowledge about a specific subject.
