If you're interested in a career in arts administration, start by getting involved in your local arts scene. Find people who do this kind of work and ask lots of questions.

"As an artist myself, this job is wonderful because it involves me daily in so much art," says arts administrator Francis Thomas.

Another good way to get a feel for this kind of work is by volunteering for local arts organizations. You'll gain valuable experience -- and you'll be a welcome source of help. "Volunteering is a great way to get yourself known within the community," says Randy Follett. He works for an arts council.

Most arts administrators have training in arts or management, or experience in the field. Consider taking a college course in arts administration. Courses vary in length, depending on the school.

The Association of Arts Administration Educators says arts institutions are demanding higher levels of sophistication from their administrators. Master's degrees are needed to secure the best jobs.
