Insider Info

Additional Information

Bicycle mechanics come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many begin working in a repair shop while in high school or college, training under an experienced bicycle mechanic.

Others attend a bike repair school or take a class at a local college. These institutions offer certification for bike mechanics, which is recommended but not necessary.

Because bikes are more complicated than they were years ago, more and more employers are looking for mechanics with formal training.

"Employers are far more interested in hiring individuals with formal training than people who have taught themselves by working on their own bikes," says John Barnett. He is the president of the Barnett Bicycle Institute Inc.
