Additional Information

Most optical engineers earn a master's degree, say engineer Imelda De La Rue. Many have even gone on to get their PhD.

Engineer Gregory Pierce says there are a few two-year programs in optics that offer associate's degrees, but this is not the program of study most optical engineers follow.

Pierce says students should ask what they want to get out of the program: do you want a program that emphasizes theory or one that provides application-oriented instruction? He also recommends that students look for universities that offer small class sizes. Small classes mean more individual attention and a better chance to know professors.

Also, search for schools where the faculty is researching areas you are interested in and where the labs have up-to-date equipment.
